About

Elizabeth is a graduate student in New York City.  She’s either an anthropologist or a historian, depending on which day you ask, although she has also been an advocacy coordinator, a barista, an editor, a secretary, a cornershop clerk, a farmhand, a teacher, and a tutor.  Her interests include cities, food, the politics of memory, poetry, languages that have the words kitab and kebab, music from faraway places, rabble-rousing, urban gardening, secondhand bookshops, ghostwriting for the revolution, and learning to take better photographs.

Verbal Privilege started out in Oxford and is now based in scenic Gowanus, Brooklyn, via stints in Seattle and İstanbul.  It used to live here, and made the leap to WordPress in October 2008.  The title is from Adrienne Rich’s poem North American Time.  The current header image is from a photo of the wooden floor created by artist Ann Hamilton for the room housing the foreign language collection at the Seattle Central Library.
