Taj through the Gateway to India, January 2004

The pundit-ghouls are out in full force, as ever–Baker and Kaplan among the worst–milking the aftermath as shamelessly as Modi at his press conference.

I’d rather just read what my friends have to say–contrapuntal (who was my first guide to South Bombay, five winters ago), especially this post, and Buchu (scathing here, on Adiga’s line about five-star hotels).  My thoughts are with Szerelem, in particular.

Neha has been doing a tremendous job at Global Voices, as have the SAJA folks.

A few other things worth reading:

Amit Chaudhuri (I’ve often called his Afternoon Raag my favorite book about Oxford, but it’s just as much a book about Mumbai) in the Guardian, via Amitava

Ingrid Srinath of Civicus (via AK)

Adil Najam at Pakistaniat (via CM)

Naresh Fernandes in TNR (via NK, who also made a translation of this poem that I’d link to if I could)

CM has some more worthwhile links in this post, too.
