Watching the live stream on CNN/IBN, my rudimentary Hindi getting an unexpected and unpleasant workout from the press conferences.  Most of my dear ones in India are elsewhere now, but many of their friends and colleagues and relatives live there.  I know several of the people who read this have ties to the city; I hope all of your loved ones are safe, and that this doesn’t get any worse.

These are mostly parts of Bombay I remember very well from the time I spent there several years ago (staying first in Bandra, then Colaba).  One of the places attacked was Leopold Cafe, site of many long and lovely afternoons writing.  This reminds me of the 2003 Al Qaeda attacks in Istanbul, but it looks like it may be quite a lot worse.

Neha is getting a lot of links up on Global Voices; there’s also a lot of information at Ultrabrown.  I was going to go apply for my visa today; but I imagine everyone at the consulate is very distracted right now.  Watching the coverage is strange, in part because this all feels so bloody familiar–one city after another.

Also, the strange mediated nature of these things now: twitter feed; googlemap.
